Resource Teachers: Literacy
Education Minister Trevor Mallard today announced the schools which would host 121 new Resource Teachers of Literacy.
The teachers would be based at 86 schools from Kaitaia to Invercargill and would play a major part in the Government's efforts to tackle literacy among the very young, Trevor Mallard said.
The positions are a result of a $34.4 million initiative over four years to help children, mainly up to eight years old, who are most at risk of failing to read and write.
The 69 existing Resource Teachers of Reading will form the core of the new Resource Teachers: Literacy, with an additional 40 positions coming on stream during this term.
The remaining resource teachers will work within Maori Immersion settings.
“As promised the Government is committed to increasing the literacy skills of all students, and especially those in their earlier years,” said Trevor Mallard.
“The specialist Resource Teachers: Literacy (RT: Lits) will be available nationwide for teaching those children in years 0-8 who need more intensive teaching in reading and writing.
“Even with the best practice in the classroom, many of our children are at risk of failing to read and write, and they are the ones who will benefit from the work of these resource teachers."
Trevor Mallard said the Literacy Taskforce recognised that some pupils required intensive teaching if they were to have the opportunity to reach their potential, and it recommended to Government that there should be a nationally co-ordinated system of literacy interventions.
“The Government fully supports this view, hence the establishment of resource teachers of literacy.
“The 121 literacy specialists will provide expert support to teachers in developing their classroom reading and writing programmes, and they will work with those individual pupils in the primary sector who are the hardest to teach to read and write.”
“They will provide an itinerant resource that will give national coverage. All of these resource teachers will undergo a specific training programme at post graduate or post graduate certificate level, to ensure that all of the teachers who hold these positions are skilled in the latest strategies for literacy intervention.”
