National's State House Sales

Published: Wed 6 Dec 2000 04:29 PM
 The previous Government sold more than 11,000 state houses.
 More than $1 billion in revenue from sales was made but little invested in building new houses
 This comprises a regional breakdown of the numbers of properties sold and the proceeds or money the previous Government received for them.
 Most sales (more than 2/3) went to private developers.
 The state house sales programme was implemented at the same time as the 'market rents' were being charged on state houses
 Market rents (which saw state rents rise 106%) and the widespread sale of state houses have been blamed for the overcrowding and hardship experienced in low-income communities
