The provision of adequate gymnasium facilities in girls' schools is particularly important for the health of our community, Wellington Central MP and former school principal, Marian Hobbs, said today.
She welcomed the announcement of a special Government funding package of $619,840 for a gymnasium for Wellington East Girls' College
"Girls in particular must regard maintaining a healthy body as part of their life skills," she said. "It was apparent to me at the recent 75th anniversary celebrations of Wellington East Girls' College that while former students valued what the school was now able to give current students in arts and technology they were determined that the same should be provided in health and physical education. I am confident they will be delighted with today's news.
"Bringing together the health and physical education syllabuses has highlighted the inadequacy of the old-style gym or freezing playing fields.
"I welcome the development of the sports centre for Wellington East Girls' College. It will give students far greater opportunity to discover the benefits and relevance of developing healthy lifestyles."
