Disability Strategy Work Continues - Lianne Dalziel
The Government's commitment to developing a Disability Strategy will continue unabated Cabinet Minister Lianne Dalziel
said today.
Lianne Dalziel has been appointed Minister for Disability Issues following Ruth Dyson's resignation of her portfolios.
"The Disability Strategy has been a key plank of this government and Ruth Dyson has acted as the catalyst for the first
real recognition, people from the disability sectors have received in New Zealand's history. I am determined to carry on
the good work that Ruth has started," Lianne Dalziel said.
"I am fortunate to have worked closely with Ruth on issues of special education and health of older people, both of
which relate to the Disability Strategy. I will continue to have a close working relationship with Ruth who remains
committed to ensuring the Disability Strategy is developed through to its implementation.
"Developing this Strategy is a priority for this government in terms of ensuring the availability of disability services
and removing barriers that prevent people from leading full lives.
"The messages that have come out of the meetings on this Strategy so far have centred around identifying barriers,
particularly in public attitude toward disability, and better coordination of government services for people with
disabilities and their families.
"We will continue working closely with various agencies as we now look to analyse over 200 submissions on the Strategy,
consider the ideas, and finally implement a blueprint for all government departments in terms of how they address
disability issues.
"The reference group for the Disability Strategy will continue to have an important role in working with officials, the
disability sector and government."
Lianne Dalziel will receive her first briefing from the Ministry of Health's Disability Support Services officials,
today.
