All seven Green Party MPs will be handing out organic apples to commuters at the Wellington Railway Station tomorrow
morning to celebrate and mark international car free day.
"The organic apples are intended as a small thank-you gift from the Earth for those people who use environmentally
friendly transport systems," said Green Party Transport Spokesperson Sue Kedgley.
The MPs will be at the railway station between 7.30 - 9am.
The seven Green MPs will be avoiding private motor vehicles for the day and are urging the rest of parliament to follow
their lead and set an right example to the rest of the country.
Nandor will arrive on skateboard and it is rumoured that Sue Kedgley will be borrowing her son's scooter.
"Car emissions contribute to global warming which is already having a significant impact on coastal nations so, while
Car Free Day is a fun occasion, the message is in fact very serious," said Ms Kedgley.
"Emissions from cars are polluting our cities, damaging our environment and endangering those who use other forms of
transport, such as cyclists. Neither our cities nor the environment can sustain our current transport trends and we
simply must take some steps to change our habits," she said.
"Transport is a core Green Party issue and we take it very seriously. We are hoping tomorrow's Car Free Day will be very
well supported and the message that public transport is the way of the future will get through not only to the public,
but to the Government as well."
