Royal Commission Decision A Travesty

Published: Mon 21 Aug 2000 10:41 PM
The Royal Commission of inquiry into genetic modified organisms decision to grant interested party status only to the Green party is a travesty, said ACT MP and farmer Gerry Eckhoff.
“It is an outrage to suggest the Green party represents the only political views on this exceptionally important subject. Their interest is no greater than any other party except theirs is a non debatable, bull-headed totally opposed position on Genetically Modified Organisms.
“The Royal Commission stated that ‘the applicants case was that its members were not the general public but a group of people working together to represent green philosophies in their families and communities as well as politics. The submission stated that the entry of the Greens into Parliament was to obtain another place to raise the Green voice, but that politics was not the party’s primary goal’.
“Does this mean that unless you tow the Green party line on conservation and green issues you’re somehow deluded?
“Or has the Royal Commission adjudged ACT’s core principles ‘that individuals are the rightful owners of their own lives and therefore have inherent freedoms and responsibilities and that the proper purpose of government is to protect such freedoms and not to assume such responsibilities’ are inferior to the Greens?
“The Royal Commission has prejudged the importance of the fashionable and populist propaganda espoused by the Greens.
“ACT’s desire for all of humanity to benefit from scientific progress, but from the Royal Commission’s decision it is hard to see how this will happen,” said Gerry Eckhoff.
