Kedgley highlights hypocrisy over alcohol and cannabis
Green MP Sue Kedgley today said there was a double standard in parliament and the community over drug use and that a
consistent and co-ordinated national strategy to reduce the harm of all drugs was urgently required to protect youth.
Speaking in parliament on the Alcohol Amendment Bill this afternoon Ms Kedgley that New Zealand has a serious youth
drinking problem with a staggering one third of 14 - 18 year olds who are heavy drinkers.
"We know that the younger people start to drink, the greater the harm to their bodies and the greater the likelihood of
addiction.
"Not nearly enough is being done to warn young people of the harm that alcohol can do to their health," she said.
"Why are school principals who are hysterical about cannabis silent on this issue?" she asked.
"What is needed is a comprehensive education programme to minimise the harm of all drugs including alcohol, cannabis and
cigarettes," said Ms Kedgley.
