“This gruesome murder should send a serious message to Mr Robson that he must take responsibility for his soft-on-crime experiments that have seen him promote restorative justice and home detention for violent offenders.”
“This Government is so arrogant it has completely ignored the call from the com
munity for tougher sentencing no he can no longer blame the previous administration for tragedies that happen on his watch,” Mr Shirley said.
Mr Shirley said he was surprised to learn from police sources that even some members of the criminal community want to see people like Hotene locked up for good so they can not hurt anyone any more.
“If this soft-on-crime Minister will not listen to police and his own staff promoting a get-tough attitude, then perhaps he will take note of what some hardened criminals themselves have to say.
“If Taffy Hotene was still in prison for his previous rape and assault convictions, Kylie Jones would still be alive,” Mr Shirley said.
“Not only was he allowed out of prison early but there was a total break-down in the probation monitoring system. Can Mr Robson assure us this would not happen also under his much-lauded home detention scheme?
“The Minister should put his job where his mouth is and threaten to resign if another violent offender is allowed, during his term in office, out of prison half way through his sentence to kill or maim again,” Mr Shirley said.
