New Zealand First Welcomes Common Sense On Arms Bill
New Zealand First welcomes the National Opposition Party’s decision not to support their own Arms Amendment Bill as a
victory for common sense said New Zealand First spokesman for Law and Order, Ron Mark.
“I never understood how National could ever come to propose such an unworkable piece of legislation as it did anyway.
“During the last election we continually said that overseas initiatives such as these were proving to be hugely
expensive and grossly ineffective in reducing the levels of crime. Evidence has since confirmed this.
“New Zealand First now wants Parliament to concentrate on law changes that will punish severely, people who use firearms
for criminal activities, or who are found to be illegally in possession of firearms.
“It is time to leave our Olympic shooters, our legitimate collectors and good, keen men and women who trap and hunt our
back country and do so much to help rid our native forests of wild pig, deer and opossums alone. It is time to do more
in mental health care to reduce the tragic numbers of suicides and needless deaths.
“It is time to do more in enforcing compliance with existing laws as they pertain to the storage of firearms and
ammunition. It is time to increase the penalties and to hammer those who break our existing laws.
“I look forward to working with Labour on the real issues that will reduce the incidences of improper and illegal use of
firearms,” said Mr Mark.
