ERB 'charm offensive' an urban myth

Published: Thu 3 Aug 2000 11:18 AM
The Government's so-called 'charm offensive' to business is fast becoming an urban myth, National's Industrial Relations spokesperson Max Bradford said today.
"They say they've been talking to pragmatic business about the Bill - but today we've seen hundreds of pragmatic business speaking out against it.
"Full-page advertisements in daily newspapers from business show the strength of concern from businesses about the impact of the law change.
"The businesses have produced a strong case against the Employment Relations Bill - in the communications battle the advertisement wins hands down against a fridge magnet.
"It remains a mystery who the Government has actually listened to over the Employment Relations Bill.
"Who are the "pragmatic" businesses the Prime Minister claimed the Government would listen to over the Bill?
"None of the 200 or so in the newspapers today that's for sure. And despite being asked many many times to let us know who - she won't.
"The Government talked long and hard about its so-called charm offensive to business.
"It was a good story at the time - but it's fast becoming clear that's all it was - a good yarn that never happened."
