Phil Goff Decides To Support Truth In Sentencing
Monday 17th Jul 2000 Richard Prebble Media Release -- Justice
Last week Phil Goff released a Justice Department report attacking my Truth in Sentencing Bill but today he does a U-turn and says he supports it, said ACT Leader Hon Richard Prebble.
“What has happened? Has the Labour Party taken one of its public opinion polls and learnt what the referendum should have told them; that 92% of New Zealanders are in favour of tougher sentences.
“Is Phil Goff now admitting his claim that Truth in Sentencing would cost $838m is utter nonsense.
“Perhaps he has had time to read the NSW Law Commission report into their Truth in Sentencing law and the full support they give it.
“Phil Goff and the Labour/Alliance coalition will have to stop sitting on the fence next week.
“When Parliament resumes my Truth in Sentencing Bill will come before the House and all MPs will have to vote for Truth in Sentencing or against it,” said Hon Richard Prebble.
