DEATH WITH DIGNITY
New Zealand First MP Peter Brown has submitted for ballot the Death with Dignity Bill. “This is a personal decision with
no commitment from my colleagues asked for or given,” said Mr Brown.
“After much deliberation I have come to the conclusion that sound legislation embracing voluntary euthanasia would be a
preferred option to the upsurge of ‘euthanasia advice clinics’ proposed by Dr Philip Nitschke, during his recent visit
to New Zealand.
“My decision to promote this Bill has not come without some personal difficulties. Like many, I too have struggled with
the controversy of this issue - my personal dilemma being between my Christian values and the rights of someone to die
with dignity.
“I recently chaired a meeting where Dr Nitschke was guest speaker, and whilst I found his speech profound it was the
sincere logic of an elderly lady at that meeting that finally convinced me to promote this Bill,” concluded Peter Brown.
