Replace Grant Gillon, Urges Shirley

Published: Wed 5 Jul 2000 03:26 PM
ACT New Zealand Whip Ken Shirley has written to Jim Anderton to urge the Alliance caucus to replace Grant Gillon as the Alliance Whip.
“The House was appalled by Mr Gillon’s lack of judgement and poor taste with his disallowed supplementary question yesterday. If Mr Gillon had portrayed genuine remorse or regret I believe the House would be more inclined to accept his slip and let the matter rest.
However, on television news last night he showed no remorse and on a radio interview this morning his arrogant demeanour displayed a lack of contrition.
“His statements during the radio interview further compounded the situation to the point where I no longer have any respect or trust in his judgement.
“Trust and respect between Whips is essential for the smooth functioning of Parliament and Mr Gillon must be replaced as the Alliance Whip to restore the necessary confidence,” concluded Mr Shirley.
