Planning of major changes to the Executive Wing (the Beehive) are now underway as a further stage of the refurbishment
project commences.
In this year's budget, the Government allocated $ 6.3 m for the start of this next stage of the refurbishment programme.
"I was delighted with the commitment made by the Government in the budget", Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Jonathan Hunt
said today, "to enable this staged refurbishment project to continue."
It is expected that this stage of the refurbishment project will be completed in 2003, at a total cost of $30 m
including GST.
"After some 23 years of intensive use, the décor, furnishings and fittings in the building are showing their age and are
in desperate need of replacement and refurbishment." Mr Hunt said.
The work will involve the major part of the building refurbishment project. All the office accommodation in the building
(floors 4-10) will be upgraded with new air-conditioning, new energy efficient lighting, updated communication systems,
replacement floor coverings and furniture throughout and improved office layout and security. Construction work is
expected to commence in early 2001.
"When the refurbishment programme is finally completed" Mr Hunt said, " the Beehive will provide an improved working
environment utilising modern building technologies and be a place in which users and others will be delighted and proud
to work and visit."
