Budget 2000. Police Numbers Increase
The Labour/Alliance Government has delivered Police Districts throughout New Zealand an increase in police staff.
This year's Budget has provided for 335 full time positions. This includes 225 Highway Patrol positions that will be
fully established by November 2001.
Northland Police District gets an extra 29.5 full time positions
North Shore/Waitakere Police District gets an extra 37.5 full time positions
Auckland City Police District gets an extra 14.5 full time positions
Counties Manukau Police District gets an extra 30.5 full time positions
Waikato Police District gets an extra 42.5 full time positions
Bay Of Plenty Police District gets an extra 38.5 full time positions
Eastern Police District gets an extra 16.5 full time positions
Central Police District gets an extra 48.5 full time positions
Wellington Police District gets an extra 18.5 full time positions
Tasman Police District gets an extra 19.5 full time positions
Canterbury Police District gets an extra 21.5 full time positions
Southern Police District gets an extra 17.5 full time positions.
These positions are on top of existing police numbers.
This Budget also provides for an additional 12 Intel staff, to be shared amongst the greater Auckland region's Police
districts, to provide IT and intelligence capabilities to the frontline police and Law Enforcement Teams.
Minister of Police Hon. George Hawkins said: "This Budget delivers on the Pledge Card promise to crack down on burglary
and youth crime. It provides extra dedicated Highway Patrol police to ensure that our highways and state roads are
safer.
"It also links to the Key Government Goal of Restoring Trust in Government and Providing Strong Social Services, by
contributing towards building safe communities," George Hawkins said.
