Defence Needs Ignored

Published: Thu 15 Jun 2000 05:54 PM
Difficulties within Defence will be accelerated as a consequence of Government failing to address this need within today’s budget claims Ron Mark, New Zealand First Defence Spokesman.
“Already the seriousness of the situation is placing the operational ability of our Airforce in peril.
“To see those cracks papered over at this time is regretted,” said Mr Mark, “and promissory notes for the future will do nothing to stem the flow of experienced servicemen and women from the services.
“The budget is refreshing in that it does not reduce Defence spending as had become the trend over recent years,” said Mr Mark, “but never the less, the three services, Airforce, Navy and Army have largely had their urgent needs ignored.”
