New Zealand First has warned that the reported solution to the Fijian crisis amounts to legalising a terrorist action.
It has been reported that the Chaudhry Government will be disestablished in favour of an interim government in which
George Speight is given both a role and an amnesty for his part in the armed hostage taking.
The Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters, said that this would be an appalling outcome and would be the result of weakness on
the part of the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
“If the United Nations made it clear that it would not engage any Fijian soldier in any UN operation it would be a
significant threat to both the Fijian Military and to the local economy. The Commonwealth Secretariat should make it
plain that Fiji would be ostracised.
“Speight and his cohorts committed a terrorist act. It will have long term repercussions for Fiji and all its
neighbours, including New Zealand,” said Mr Peters.
