May Day mayday for workers
May Day 2000 will go down in history as dragging back an industrial regime that most workers can't relate to and don't
want, says Belinda Vernon, Auckland National MP.
"There is no cause for workers to celebrate. As more details of the Employment Relations Bill are exposed, employees are
realising that the Government is swinging the pendulum back too far.
"Workers know that the future lies in innovative solutions that take our country forward, not old regimes that take us
back.
"Employees are just starting to realise how rigid the ERB is and how little choice they will have.
"The ERB is just one of this Government's anti-business viruses. Its other policies are already crushing business
confidence as today's National Bank survey shows.
"While the previous employment legislation may not have been perfect, this Bill creates huge uncertainties for employees
and employers and the casualty will be new jobs.
"This is just one more virus that employees and employers don't need," says Ms Vernon.
