TVNZ irresponsible to run privy Council as a race issue
ACT Leader Richard Prebble believes it is irresponsible for TVNZ to claim that the abolition of the Privy Council is a race issue.
Mr Prebble was commenting on today’s TV One News coverage of Helen Clark’s plans to remove the Privy Council as New Zealand’s highest court.
“It’s absurd to imply that it is only Maori who are opposed to the abolishment of New Zealand right to appeal to the Privy Council.
“There are very sound reasons for favouring the Privy Council. It gives New Zealand access to the worlds second highest common law court. The standard of judgement has been very high while the relative costs have been very low.
“As a small country the Privy Council gives us access to objective judges.
“The Privy council has served, and will continue to serve, both Maori and non-Maori well,” said Richard Prebble.
