The Green Party are delighted at Auckland City Council plans to recycle all organic household refuse, saying the move
will be crucial in reducing Auckland's land-fill waste.
Auckland City Council and the organic waste industry are currently working on plans to have a viable organic waste
collection service operating by mid-way through next year.
Green Party co-leader Rod Donald said the initiative was a major step towards drastically cutting land-fill waste. Mr
Donald said the plan would be great news for the environment and urged other councils to follow Auckland's lead.
"As well as collection the Green Party hopes the council will be encouraging people to recycle their own organic waste
through home composting and worm bins. This would reduce the amount of waste that would have to be collected and would
make for healthy and productive vegetable and flower gardens," he said.
"It may be cost effective for the council to provide compost bin kitsets or worm bins to residents," he said.
"The amount of rubbish that Kiwis dump into land-fills is unsustainable and is leading to the unecessary creation of
more and more dumps.
"With organic waste sometimes making up half of all rubbish, the implications of cutting this waste out of the total
land-fill refuse are obvious.
"The Green Party congratulate the Auckland City Council for this timely and commonsense step towards a society with zero
waste. We look forward to seeing this scheme in action as soon as possible," said Mr Donald.
