Tanczos Welcomes Christchurch Womens' Kitchen Decision
Green Party Justice Spokesperson Nandor Tanczos today welcomed Justice Minister Matt Robson's decision to allow
Christchurch Women's Prison to keep providing their own food.
The decision to shut down the Christchurch Women's kitchen and have a neighbouring mens prison provide all meals for the
women inmates was opposed by the women, some of who went on a hunger strike in protest.
Nandor Tanczos congratulated the women on their victory.
"I also congratulate the Justice Minister for recognising this issue is about more than money," said Mr Tanczos.
"Allowing the inmates at Christchurch Women's to produce and cook their own food gives the inmates a wide range of
skills and is of considerable rehabilitative merit."
Mr Tanczos said being able to prepare ones own food was a basic human right.
"I would like to acknowledge the efforts these women have made in achieving this decision," he said.
Nandor Tanczos has sent a letter of congratulation to the inmates at Christchurch Womens' Prison along with a
comprehensive cookbook dedicated to healthy food.
