Alliance May White-Ant Legal Aid Changes

Published: Wed 5 Apr 2000 04:19 PM
The Alliance has not yet agreed to support the Government's legal aid changes, says National MP Tony Ryall.
Alliance MP Kevin Campbell indicated to a witness to the Justice Select Committee this morning that the Alliance was listening to submissions before deciding whether or not to support the bill.
Tackled by National MPs, Mr Campbell refused to confirm Alliance support for the Legal Services Bill. Instead he reiterated the Alliance was listening to submissions.
"What's going on? Mr Goff supports the bill but Mr Robson and the Alliance don't. Hot on the heels of the Bail Bill stand off, this is another example of Mr Goff's poor management of his legislation.
"The Labour Party is yet again relying on National to support tough decisions" said Mr Ryall. "Mr Goff can't keep expecting National to pick up the pieces."
