Improved Services in Porirua-Kapiti
Health Minister Annette King said today she strongly supported the case for 24-hour accident and emergency services to
be provided within the Porirua-Kapiti area in the 2001-2002 financial year, up to two years earlier than planned.
"I believe people in the Porirua-Kapiti region deserve certainty on this issue. It is important that this growing area
has access to a full 24-hour emergency service provided by Capital Coast Health, with appropriate medical and nursing
services to level 3, as recommended by a Ministry of Health report."
"I am also expecting CCH to consult with the community on ways pre-emergency services, such as ambulance and helicopter
transport, can be improved.
"The Ministry of Health has reviewed emergency services in the region, and I am asking Capital Coast Health to provide
an interim solution to improve the existing situation. I am expecting the full enhanced service to be operational within
two years. I expect the costings for the enhanced services to be included in the Capital Coast business plan later this
year."
Mrs King, who today discussed Porirua-Kapiti hospital issues with Porirua Mayor Jenny Brash, also said an enhanced range
of secondary services needed to be delivered from Kenepuru Hospital.
"I am referring particularly to day surgery provisions, similar to the superclinics in Auckland. Other areas that need
enhancing include outpatient clinics, maternity services, the provision of rehabilitation beds, child health services
and mental health and diagnostic services."
Mrs King praised the hard work of local MPs Graham Kelly and Judy Keall and local mayors in promoting the health
interests of Porirua-Kapiti people.
