Brown Urges Greens To Stop Weasel Words

Published: Fri 17 Mar 2000 10:36 AM
New Zealand First ACC Spokesperson, Peter Brown, has challenged the Green Party Members of Parliament to stop their use of weasel words and to support initiatives to provide better entitlements to accident victims.
Shortly after the election the Greens said on nation-wide television they would seek a weeks bonus at Christmas for all beneficiaries.
“This did not happen – it was simply a hollow promise.
“Enough of such empty words,” said Mr Brown, “let’s see some tangible and meaningful support by the Greens for working people they so frequently purport to represent.
“I challenge the Greens to not support the final passing of the ACC Bill next week until such time as there is a clause inserted which will guarantee to increase entitlements to accident victims. I am prepared to sit down with them and discuss the detail on how such can be achieved.
“The primary areas of concern which require the Greens support are co-payments to doctors by accident victims, travelling expenses, and agreed minimum incomes for casual workers.
“The Greens are aware that $millions are being saved on accident insurance premiums, and that the Bill they are supporting the Government railroad through Parliament, will not give one cent to assist accident victims
“They are rightfully supporting clauses which will allow self employed people to obtain ‘agreed value’ workplace insurance, I challenge them to stop the Bill until there are similar arrangements possible for employees,” concluded Peter Brown.
