New Zealand First has declined to take part in the MMP review as outlined by the Attorney-General.
The Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters, said today that New Zealand First MPs are concerned that they will be asked to
“rubber stamp” a pre-arranged outcome instead of seriously looking at the electoral system to make it work for all New
Zealanders.
“We fear that this will be another case of the old political parties, Labour and National, deciding what is best for
them, instead of trying to find out what the voters really want.
“We are concerned that the terms of reference have been changed for the MMP Review, that the Chairperson, Jonathon Hunt,
has publicly stated strong anti-MMP views, and that we will have no power of veto.
“The Government has already ignored the will of the people over the size of Parliament, and we have no reason to believe
that they can carry out this MMP review to ensure the outcome is fair and democratic,” said Winston Peters.
