The design of the new health structures must accurately reflect the Treaty relationship this Government has made a
commitment to says Associate Minister of Health Hon Tariana Turia.
"There is a hierarchy of decision-making levels in the health sector and through the Hospital and Health Services boards
which mana whenua need to participate in and work alongside of Government.
"Treaty relationships already established in the health sector must be built on and improved by mana whenua and these
Hospital and Health Services boards until the District Health Boards are established, and must exist at all levels of
the decision-making process.
"Participation in decision-making processes is therefore not optional for Maori it is a requirement.
"Whanau, hapu and iwi involvement in the new health structures through representation is an example of that requirement.
"I am therefore very pleased at the response to the Governments’ call for nomination for the extra places on the
Hospital and Health Services boards.
"There have been 408 Maori people nominated, making up 22 per cent of the overall nominations. There is strong interest
in every region and I thank you all for your willingness to become involved in the new health structures of this
Government.
"It is only through your willingness to participate and work with us, that the Government can fulfil its commitment to
improve the Maori health status and Maori development.
"I also thank you for the contribution you have made both professionally and personally to improving the wellbeing of
our whanau.
"I intend to consult with you so that you will have the representatives you need to impact at the decision-making level.
This will ensure the health services provided are designed to contribute to your overall development,” said Tariana
Turia.
