New Zealand First says the Budget Policy Statement is disappointing because it fails to recognise the serious problems
of low export growth, unemployment and lack of savings.
“Instead, the Government seems to be concentrating on vague political correctness such as celebrating our identity and
upholding the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi – whatever that means,” said the Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“There is also some vague nonsense about the clean green environment that owes more to political bargaining than a
commitment to action.
“The claim that the Government is closing the gaps between Maori, Pacific Islanders and other New Zealanders will sound
hollow unless supported by appropriate decisions in the Budget round.
“The policy seems to be more about managing the shrinkage in the economy rather than planning a strategy for export led
growth and the creation of more jobs.”
Mr Peters said that there appeared to be some positive moves over superannuation but he will watch closely to ensure
that senior citizens are not short changed again over restoring pension levels.
