Education a Lottery Under Labour - Nats

Published: Wed 8 Mar 2000 11:15 AM
“For the sake of ideology the Labour Government is happy to turn education into a gamble and send Epsom families and children into turmoil,” said Richard Worth MP for Epsom today. “Forced geographic zones will not provide any greater certainty for families and running a lottery for school places will provide even less.”
“Last year Auckland Grammar School’s Headmaster, Mr. John Morris and the Auckland Grammar School Board of Trustees took a principled stand to protect the school’s right to exercise discretion and treat applicants to their school as individuals. They are to be applauded.
“More educational places are the solution for the issue of access to education, not forced geographic zones. The National government pledged to provide more resources for Epsom families and a new school was planned. The Labour government has so far remained silent on this issue.
“Yet again the Labour government is demonstrating how it intends to treat anyone who has the courage to achieve or stand up for principles. Increasingly, this is a tall poppy bashing government, ” Mr. Worth said.
