Remove Turia from Moutoa Discussions - Nats

Published: Wed 1 Mar 2000 05:30 PM
Associate Minister of Maori Affairs Tariana Turia should be removed from talks and decisions on Moutoa Gardens on the grounds of conflict of interest, Albany MP Murray McCully told Parliament this afternoon.
Mr McCully said Mrs Turia was clearly a member of the claimant group, who has now publicly told the Government that the Gardens should be given to Maori whilst speaking with her "iwi hat" on.
"That completely undermines any objectivity in the process now underway.
"Clearly Mrs Turia should be removed from further discussions with the parties and from participating in any Government decisions on the matter.
"No reasonable New Zealander will believe that she can behave dispassionately and impartially on this matter or that she is a credible custodian of the Government's interest".
