There were two committee meetings, one of which is still in progress. Both were in Parliament House.

Committee on the Accident Insurance (Transitional Provisions) Bill (Marie Alexander)
The committee has received over 900 submissions on this bill. It heard submissions on Thursday and Friday of this week
and will hear them over several days next week. The committee will travel to Auckland to hear submissions on 14
February.
Finance and Expenditure (Graham Hill, Julian Kersey)
The committee will start considering its financial reviews on 9 February.
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, Andrew Fieldsend)
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 10 February.
Health (Nick Aldous, Sharon Woollaston)
The Health Committee commences hearing evidence on the 1998/99 financial reviews of hospital and health services this
Wednesday. It will be hearing evidence from Lakeland Health Limited and Pacific Health Limited from around 10.15 am. It
is expected that the committee will hear evidence from up to ten hospital and health services over the next seven weeks.
Justice and Electoral (Jayne Wallis, Andrew Fieldsend)
The committee will have its first meeting for the year on Wednesday, 9 February. The Justice and Electoral Committee and
the Law and Order Committee were established at the beginning of the new Parliament. These new committees now consider
matters that were previously examined by the Justice and Law Reform Committee and the Electoral Law Committee.
The terms of reference of the new Justice and Electoral Committee are Crown Legal and drafting services, electoral,
justice and privacy matters. The committee has several new items for consideration and has called for public submissions
on three of its bills as noted below.
Law and Order (Tracey Conlon, Tracey Rayner)
The committee will meet on Thursday, 10 February, from 10.00 am till 1.00 pm. This is the first meeting this year. The
meeting will be open to the public during briefings from the Department for Courts, Department for Corrections, the New
Zealand Police and the Serious Fraud Office.
Local Government and Environment (David Bagnall, Malcolm McNamara)
The committee will receive and introductory briefing from the Audit Office and public briefings from the Department of
Internal Affairs and the Local Government Commission. It will also consider the Wildlife (Penalties) Bill.
Maori Affairs (Kia Paranihi, Denise Te Karu)
The committee will meet on Thursday, 10 February, when it will be briefed by the Audit Office on two of its reports and
also the role and functions of that Office. Consideration on the only bills before the committee, Te Ture Whenua Maori
Amendment Bill and the Maori Purposes Bill is planned to take place at later dates. The submissions closing date on the
Te Ture Whenua Maori Amendment Bill has yet to be set.
Primary Production (Bob Bunch, April Bennett)
The committee's first meeting is on 10 February 2000. The Audit Office will brief the committee from 10.10 am to 11.00
am on its role and functions, executive accountability and primary production sector issues and priorities. The
committee will then be briefed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Fisheries, and Land Information
New Zealand about what they see are the issues and what they are doing about them. Each department will have
approximately half an hour. The briefings, except the one from the Audit Office are open to the public, who are welcomed
to attend. These are general briefings and are not to be confused with the financial reviews.
Regulations Review (Shelley Banks, Fiona McLean)
The committee will next meet on Wednesday, 9 February from 8.30 am to 9.15.am.
Social Services (Tim Cooper, Karen Smyth)
Five financial reviews have been referred to the committee. These are the Ministry of Housing, Department of Social
Welfare, Department of Work and Income, Housing Corporation of New Zealand and Housing New Zealand Limited. Working to a
deadline of 6 April for the government departments, the committee will begin planning its work to complete these
reviews. The committee has set aside its meeting on 9 February to receive briefings about its work from committee staff
and from the Office of the Auditor-General and about their roles in relation to the committee.
Transport and Industrial Relations (Lyn Main, Sue Goodwin)
On Wednesday, 9 February the committee will hear evidence on the financial reviews of Transfund New Zealand, Transit New
Zealand and the Maritime Safety Authority. These hearings will be open to the public.
