Minster of Social Services and Employment Steve Maharey has crippled the ability of WINZ to provide adequate job
opportunities, says ACT employment spokesman Dr Muriel Newman.
Dr Newman was responding to Steve Maharey's decision to demolish an external WINZ Advisory Board made up of New Zealand
business experts.
"The board was designed to allow WINZ management access to first class advice. This advice was used to provide jobs and
the most effective training opportunities possible for unemployed New Zealanders.
"Steve Maharey tried to justify his decision by stating the board has cost taxpayers $23,679, however he has failed to
mention the average unemployment benefit for a 20-24 year old is $7,538.96.
"This means that if, as a result of the Board's activities, only four young people get jobs, the Board will have
contributed more than it spent.
"This is just another example of Steve Maharey putting his anti-business beliefs ahead of the welfare of New Zealanders
who need it most," said Dr Newman.
