Committee notes
Committee on the Accident Insurance (Transitional Provisions) Bill (Marie Alexander)
The committee will meet on 27 January to start hearing submissions. Although submissions do not close until 31 January,
the committee will hear some of the submissions it has received early.
Finance and Expenditure (Graham Hill)The honour of holding the first committee meeting (Tuesday, 25 January) of the
millennium falls upon this committee, which has the responsibility of allocating to other committees or retaining for
itself the 1998/99 financial reviews of government departments,
Crown entities, State enterprises and Offices of Parliament. Once these have been allocated, committees can proceed
with their examinations of the performance and current operations of the organisations. Many of these will need to be
reported back by 6 April, which means a lot of committee act
ivity can be expected over coming weeks.
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders)
The committee will hold its next meeting on 10 February.
Health (Nick Aldous, Sharon Woollaston)
The committee will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, 26 January.
Justice and Electoral (Jayne Wallis)
The committee is inviting public submissions on the Statutes Amendment Bill (No. 7). The closing date for submissions is
25 February 2000. The bill makes miscellaneous amendments to the following Acts of Parliament:

Local Government and Environment (David Bagnall)The committee meets on 26 January to receive introductory briefings in
public from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment and senior managers from the Ministry for the Environment
and the Department of Conservation. At these briefings,
officials will outline the roles of their organisations, how they operate and the significant issues they face. In
closed session the committee will also consider the Wildlife (Penalties) Bill. Further introductory briefings will
follow at other meetings, particularly from organisations related
to local government.
Social Services (Tim Cooper, Karen Smyth)The committee will focus on the 1998/99 financial reviews in the coming weeks,
once these have been allocated by the Finance and Expenditure Committee. It has set aside its first meeting on 9
February to receive briefings about its work. Flowing out of t
hat the committee will programme its work for the financial reviews, working to the deadline of 6 April set by the
House.
Transport and Industrial Relations (Marie Alexander, Sue Goodwin)The committee is meeting on 26 January and will hear
evidence from the Transport Accident Investigation Commission on a petition from Gwynneth Ann Andrews and others. The
petition relates to the co-ordination of emergency services
for the rescue of survivors of Southern Air Flight 168, which ditched in Foveaux Strait in August 1998.
