TONE IT DOWN JONAH!
New Zealand First Deputy Leader Peter Brown MP today expressed his concern at Jonah Lomu’s stated desire to hold the world record for the loudest car stereo.
Statistics show that sensory disabilities such as hearing are the second most commonly reported disability type in New Zealand. 8.4% of all New Zealand children and more than 16% of all Pacific Island children fail hearing screening tests at age 5.
“Hearing loss is becoming an increasing concern in New Zealand and we need to reduce the risks, not encourage behaviour that will increase the likelihood of hearing related problems”, said Mr Brown.
“Jonah Lomu has a huge profile within his own community, within New Zealand and overseas and with that comes a certain responsibility.
“He needs to lead by example”, said Mr Brown. “I would be particularly concerned if New Zealand teenagers followed suit.
“Whilst I do not wish to stifle his ambitions, I would urge him to reassess his decision in the light of his public profile and to consider the possible implications of his actions.”
