1) Thousands of East Timorese Still Missing 28/10/99 (Washington Post) DILI, East Timor, Oct. 26-Five weeks after a
multinational peacekeeping force arrived in devastated East Timor to restore security and bring in supplies, fewer than
half of this tiny new country's residents have returned to their homes from refugee camps and mountain hideaways.

captive for almost two months by pro-independence guerrillas has been released, clearing the way for the last Indonesian
troops to leave East Timor, the UN said Wednesday.
4) Australia Welcomes Return Of Indonesian Ambassador 28/10/99 (Associated Press) CANBERRA-Foreign Minister
Alexander Downer on Tuesday welcomed news that Indonesia is sending a new ambassador to Australia, following a delay
caused by strained relations over the East Timor crisis.
5) Wiranto demoted in new Indonesian Cabinet 28/10/99 (The American Reporter) In a final blow to nearly a half
century of authoritarian rule, control of Indonesia's armed forces passed from military to political hands Monday when
Presaident Gus Dur named a civilian defense minister for the first time in the nation's history and moved armed forces
commander General Wiranto to a newly-created but less important Cabinet post.
6) UN appeals for $199 million humanitarian aid for East Timor 28/10/99 (AFP) The United Nations on Wednesday
launched an appeal to raise 199 million dollars of humanitarian aid to help the people of East Timor survive the next
nine months.
7) Canada Announces $1.5 mil in new aid for E.Timor 28/10/99 Ottawa-Canada's International Cooperation Minister,
Maria Minna, today announced a $1.5 million contribution to provide humanitarian assistance and food aid to the victims
of the violence in East Timor. This brings Canada's total contribution since the beginning of the crisis to $2.9
million.
8) Last East Timorese prisoners moved to Jakarta pending release 28/10/99 (AFP) Some of the last East Timorese
political prisoners held by Indonesia have been moved from a provincial jail to Jakarta pending their release, their
lawyer said Wednesday.
