1) A Timor Leader’s Emotional Return 24/10/99 The New York Times JAKARTA, Indonesia—With controlled fury, as
if with each word he could begin to rebuild his shattered homeland, the leader of East Timor, Jose Alexandre Gusmao,
exhorted his weeping countrymen Friday to show the world their strength.
2) East Timor independence leader Jose Alexandre "Xanana" Gusmao tried on Saturday to ease the high expectations
created by his return to his devastated homeland.
3) Independence figure’s house set ablaze in Dili 24/10/99 (AFP) The Dili home of East Timorese independence
leader Manuel Carrascalao, where his teenaged son died in a pro-Jakarta militia attack in April, was ablaze Saturday,
witnesses said.

East Timor by land, but the Indonesian military has refused to allow them to go back and get their families, a UN
refugee official said Saturday.

Timor tightened their grip on the enclave of Oecussi Saturday, pouring troops, food aid and equipment into the isolated
area by air and sea, a military spokesman said.
7) A Killing Ground Without Corpses 24/10/99 Washington Post SUAI, East Timor, Oct. 21—On Sept. 6, at
a Roman Catholic compound comprising the cathedral, Our Lady of Fatima Church and several other buildings, survivors say
a throng of pro-Indonesia militiamen engaged in one of the bloodiest acts of retribution against the people of East
Timor, who days earlier had voted to secede from Indonesia. But despite all the indications of a mass killing here,
Australian army investigators with an international peacekeeping force have run into an unusual hurdle in trying to
determine exactly what happened—a lack of bodies.

10) What are Indonesia’s Special Forces doing in Vermont? 24/10/99 Quietly tucked away in the Vermont hills, the
only private military college in the country has been educating and training current and future members of the
Indonesian army. During homecoming week at Norwich University, parents strolled the bucolic campus, crimson leaves
glistening in the bright fall sunshine. A world away, that same hue ran in the streets of East Timor. The Norwich
program, which includes both undergraduate and graduate military training, was arranged in 1997 by high-ranking
Indonesian military officers suspected of committing crimes against humanity in East Timor.
11) The reality of our diplomacy 24/10/99 The Age The East Timor crisis and Australia’s leading role in
the UN-authorised International Force for East Timor (InterFET) have brought Indonesian- Australian relations to a low
point. But these developments have also been accompanied by new questioning in Australia of the Australia-US defence
relationship - evoking the classic twin fears of either being controlled or left in the lurch by Australia’s superpower
ally.
