INDEPENDENCE LEADER RETURNS
East Timor leader Gusmao returns to Dili amid tears of joy flowing in the streets rather than blood. Australia looks forward to working with him in the development of a new nation. He had spent seven years in jail and exile.
DRUGS BUST
Waikato police today arrested an elderly Cambridge couple who have been charged with nine offences of selling cannabis which are B and C class drugs. $1600 was seized. The couple will appear in Court tomorrow. Their main customers were allegedly high school students.
GM FOODS
Australasian health ministers are meeting in Canberra regarding the introduction of mandatory labelling of genetically modified food. The food industry have allegedly been trying to scuttle the plan because of food price increases of up to 6 per cent. A final decision is expected later tonight (NZ Time).
RUGBY MASCOTS
The mascots of both Wellington and Auckland have been side-lined for tomorrows match. There is concern that the mascots may become involved in altercations following last weeks' fracas between Auckland and North Harbour mascots where Auckland's Seagull was treated by medical staff. RUSSIAN ROCKET ATTACK
At least 60 people have been killed in a Russian rocket attack in the Chechen capital of Grozny. Up to 200 were also injured. Later news reports give those killed as 118 and those critically injured as up to 400.
WORKERS KILLED IN FACTORY FIRE
Fourteen Palestinian workers have been killed in a fire at an illegal cigarette lighter factory in Hebron on the West Bank.
ISRAELI PRESIDENT QUESTION
Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife have been questioned by police about valuables he allegedly kept after leaving office.
SEARCH CONTINUES FOR PRISONER
The search continues today for a dangerous prisoner who escaped from the Auckland Paremoremo Prison. 31 year old Peter Mate-Hai-Ere escaped yesterday afternoon.
ALL BLACKS SET TO FACE SCOTLAND
The All Black team to face Scotland in the quarter finals on Monday has this morning been named. It is exactly the same side which beat England.
