KARLA CARDNO: Mark Middleton has been charged with threatening the life of the convicted killer and raper of Karla Cardno. He says he is prepared to go to jail rather than recant his threats against the killer of his step-daughter. Middleton made the threats on a TV show.
MAURI PACIFIC: Mauri Pacific Tau Henare has come up with a plan to preserve the Maori Language - compulsory lessons in Tikanga Maori for public servants. PSA are not sure it is a good idea. The policy could cost $25 million if it cost $100 per public servant. Other parties are not impressed - Labour and National say that compulsion is not a good idea. Henare also wants bi-lingual road signs.
JACK ELDER: Meanwhile Jack Elder is retiring from politics.
EAST TIMOR - BISHOP BELO: Bishop Carlos Belo is planning to return to East Timor tomorrow.
EAST TIMOR - DILI:: John Stuart Dili - helicopter movements at Dili airport. Pilot says he has been involved in reconnaissance work. Mail call at the NZ camp. In town crowd now openly displaying Falantil and CNRT regalia.
EAST TIMOR - DILI: Live I/V - The mood of NZ troops is cheerful. But they are concerned about the difference in their pay allowances as compared to the Australians. PM is expected to make an announcement on allowances tomorrow in Darwin. Enormous changes in Dili. Far more people on the streets. People now quite open about their support of independence - right - as you saw - under the noses of the Indonesians.
