DILI: Hundreds of Kiwi troops poured into Dili today just as the Prime Minister doubled the troops we will send to a full battalion.
COST: It is costing a fortune to have our troops in Timor - $75 million on top of current defence budget. The Australians are facing a bill of nearly $1 billion and are talking of spending cuts or tax hikes to fund it.
AIRLINES: Airlines are cancelling their flights over the millennium because nobody wants to fly due to Y2K fears.
LEAK: A nuclear leak in Japan has seen at least four people injured, one seriously. Radiation levels at the processing plant were 4000 times higher than normal. The leak was caused by a fire.
FIRE: A fire is blazing in the Takaka valley. It has destroyed 500 hectares of pine and firefighters hope to finish it off tomorrow.
CAMPAIGN: Richard Prebble was at the announcement of the site for Wellington’s new hospital – it stays on the Newtown site. Winston Peters was heckled at Auckland University. Tony Ryall went on student radio. Nick Smith launched a discussion document calling for tighter controls on ferrets.
MASSACRE: Associated Press say they have uncovered a massacre of 300 Korean civilians by the US during the Korean war.
