CLINTON VISIT:
Jane Young Live: Meeting with Clinton is the first bi-lateral and it went well.
Bill Clinton arrives in Christchurch and tells journalists he wants to come back next week. In a public speech in Christchurch he acknowledged Sir Edmund Hillary (his second favourite Hillary) . In his speech he mainly addressed environmental issues. TV3 weather presenter Augie Auer receives special mention. Crowd reaction positive.
In morning President took part in a video conference with Antarctica.
After meeting with Mrs Shipley for formal bilateral the President suggested joint exercises for peacekeeping. On lamb the President said that if the decision had been made the other way he would have appealed the decision to the WTO himself. The PM made a few jokes about feeding the President lots of lamb and he says he liked it.
Jane Young Live: Q: Bill and Jen seem to have hit it off? A: Yes they have and the fact that they met for twice as long as scheduled is also positive. Some tough issues were not dealt with – but on the whole everybody is pleased.
HURRICANE FLOYD: Super hurricane Floyd has cut short the President’s trip to NZ. 2 million people have evacuated from Florida and Georgia. The father of all hurricanes Floyd is a monster. The hurricane is now expected to hit a highly populated area inhabited by lots of retirees. Clinton has declared a state of emergency. Disneyworld has shut for the first time in 28 years. Brave surfers reluctant to leave.
CHINA: Police are defending their actions in breaking up a protest against Jiang Zemin. Protestor is badly shaken by the police decision to clear the protestors away. The protest was against China’s occupation of Tibet. The PM was kept waiting for more than an hour. Police say they only moved the protestors because they were concerned that there would be disorder. Jiang Zemin today inspected wool and forestry industry sites.
SOUTH KOREA: South Korea’s President Kim has a more sedate time in the capital. PM Jenny Shipley says bi-lateral talks laid a foundation for the relationship in the 21st Century.
ONE TREE HILL: One Tree Hill pine has been given a death sentence. The pine is now expected to only live for another three years. Tree historian says that trees don’t last for ever. Council is now looking for a replacement. Ngati Whatua want the remains of the tree for carving. The tree’s attackers say the tree is a symbol of oppression and they say spirits told them to attack it.
EAST TIMOR - DARWIN: Reports that some of the militia snuck onto an evacuation flight. They may now be sent back. Discussion about aid for humanitarian assistance is underway with Jakarta and air drops are expected tomorrow. Mass for German Jesuit priest killed in Timor.
EAST TIMOR - CHRISTCHURCH: President Clinton and PM Shipley have again condemned the killings in East Timor following their bilateral in Christchurch. President says it is not just a matter of stopping the violence. “We will do the best we can” – Clinton. “NZ is making urgent preparations” – PM Shipley. Special
EAST TIMOR – JAKARTA: Students opposed to international peacekeepers demonstrate. Protestors in London protest outside international arms conference.
EAST TIMOR - UN: The United Nations has moments ago voted to send peace-keepers to East Tmor. No further details are yet available.
