EAST TIMOR - PEACE-KEEPING: Indonesia is again rejecting demands for peace keepers in East Timor. US President delivers stern warnings in a speech to business leaders about economic consequences of recent events. But the Indonesians say that there is no peace to keep at present. The PM however says she has received private advice that gives her confidence a decision on peace-keeping will be made shortly.
EAST TIMOR – HUMAN RIGHTS: UN Human Rights Commissioner Mary Robinson is calling for an international war crimes tribunal to investigate recent events in East Timor.
APEC – CLINTON: Police say there should not be a repeat of an incident in Auckland where a police officer tried to move the President’s mother-in-law into the crowd and away from the presidential party because he did not recognise her.
APEC:- SCHOOL CLOSURES: Schools have been making some unusual requests relating to APEC asking to move their “closed day” to another day. Many schools are expected to close tomorrow.
ANSETT STRIKE: Ansett NZ has had to cancel 150 strikes tomorrow because of strike action. All passengers have been contacted. Lockout
PLIGHT OF KIWI: The Department of Conservation says the Kiwi population is declining in Northland. Forest & Bird wants the government to save the Kiwi in the wild.
TENNIS: President Clinton has congratulated Serena Williams on her win in the US Open and has invited her to the White House to celebrate.
