TIMOR: President Clinton is warning Indonesia that they face dire economic consequences if East Timor was not bought under control. Clinton has temporarily suspended all military ties, effective immediately. He said he will be discussing the issue in New Zealand and said he would support a UN mission in the province.
VATICAN: The Vatican foreign minister has added a call for a UN mission to East Timor.
MILITARY TIES: New Zealand is expected to suspend military ties with Indonesia and it is being considered now. Economic sanctions are also under consideration.
TANKER TO GO: The navy tanker HMNZS Endeavour is on its way to Darwin on Monday.
UN EVACUATION: The UN is evacuating more staff from their compound in Dili after giving the Indonesian government more time to gather control.
APEC MEETING: Today APEC Ministers are under pressure to agree on trade and economic issues in the Auckland Town Hall. Today electronic commerce is under discussion and a new free trade agreement with Singapore and New Zealand is expected to be signed tomorrow.
PROTESTS: Auckland has seen more APEC and Timor protests today. Amnesty International has uncovered a huge banner calling for human rights to be on APEC agenda. 150 motorcades are moving through the city today and traffic disruptions are expected to be severe.
FORESTS: Labour says it will end native logging if it becomes the next government, spelling the end of the beech scheme. Jim Sutton has resigned as forestry spokesperson over the decision and has been replaced by Pete Hodgson.
O’CONNOR: Damien O’Connor, the West Coast MP for Labour says he is shattered by the decision.
PETROL: All companies have increased their petrol prices again, except BP who will make a decision today.
WATSON: No sign of a verdict yet after the 13 week trial ended yesterday.
BOMB ATTACK: 40 people have been killed after a Moscow apartment was bombed.
MENTAL ILLNESS IN PRISONS: Health Minister Wyatt Creech says he is concerned to learn of the scale of mental illness in New Zealand prisons as outlined in a new report.
ENGINEERS UNION: The Engineers Union says free trade is costing provincial jobs.
AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL: ACC is planning to halve the city’s waste by 2003, targeting recycling and reusing organic waste.
