TIMOR OUT OF CONTROL: The government says NZ troops are likely to take place in a UN peacekeeping force in East Timor as
the Indonesian military appears to be joining in a campaign of ethnic cleansing. A formal announcement will be made on
the deployment and any troops will be armed. Pressure is coming on the government to focus on Timor at APEC and to cut
military ties with Indonesia.
INDONESIAN POLICE CHIEF: The Indonesian Police Chief has admitted the situation is out of control in East Timor.
Thousands of Timorese people are being rounded up and taken away to undisclosed destinations. Doubts exist whether
President Habibe can even control the military now.
RED CROSS: The Red Cross have been forced to shut down their operation in East Timor and fear for about 60 local staff
who have been rounded up after the compound was raided by pro-independence militia last night.
MARTIAL LAW: Indonesian President Habibe has declared martial law in East Timor.
APEC: Police working on APEC security will not comment on whether the Indonesian delegates will need extra security.
REFUGEE COUNCIL: The Auckland Refugee Council says the detention of 19 refugees in Mt Eden because of APEC is heavy
handed and inappropriate.
RURAL GPS: The incentives for rural doctors have been boosted to encourage more doctors to work in more remote areas by
the Health Funding Authority. Doctors say the new system is fairer but more needs to be done.
WATSON: The Crown is in the second day of a long closing address in the Watson murder trial. Paul Davison QC said Watson
was relentlessly looking for a woman on New years Eve and acting in an unusual fashion.
PAROLE: The parole board will meet tomorrow to consider whether to parole the killer of Upper Hutt teenager Karla
Cardno.
ANSETT: Ansett has cancelled more than 100 flights for next week when their pilots are to strike over a contract
dispute.
CANDID CAMERA: The creator of Candid Camera has died at the age of 82.
ALBATROSS: Dunedin’s church bells pealed today to welcome the first Albatross which returned to the breeding colony last
