1. SAMOAN MURDER - A 34 year old Samoan man, Eletise Leafa Vitale, has been sentenced to death after pleading guilty to the murder of the Samoan Public Works Minister Luagalau Levaula Kamu. The plea came as a surprise, all death sentences in Samoa have been commuted to life imprisonment but no one knows if this will be the case this time. Large crowds turned out for the court hearing.
2. WINZ - Work and Income is shutting the door on many beneficiaries according to a Palmerston North advocacy group. Of 850 people who came to them for help after seeing WINZ, 66 per cent received a benefit or more assistance afterwards. A Christchurch advocacy group says they have had the same experience. WINZ say staff are trained to give the right advice and no instructions have been handed out to refuse benefits when people are entitled.
3. WINE - The Wine Institute of New Zealand (WINZ) is considering changing its name because it fears being associated with the bad publicity due to the Work and Income publicity of late.
4. HOME INVASION - There has been another terrifying home invasion case, this time in Christchurch. Two men burst into a woman's home and threatened her with a screwdriver while demanding money and drugs. They tied the woman up and left. Police say the men may face the new home invasion provisions. One man has been arrested and charged, another is being sought.
5. SHOOTING - The man shot by police in Auckland has undergone more surgery and is still in a critical condition.
6. GROUNDING - The crew of a trawler that run aground off Northland had a lucky escape. All got off on life rafts.
7. TATTOO - There was a Maori flavour to the Edinburgh tattoo this year as ceremonies were held as part of the tattoo coming to Wellington next year.
