1. WINZ: The Head of WINZ is under pressure to explain her department's spending. She has been called into the Beehive for a ticking off for WINZ manager's travel expenditure to a conference. The Minister has referred the matter to the State Service Commissioner. In Parliament the Minister responsible said he was concerned about the spending, but said generally she had done a good job.
2. GANG WALLS DOWNED: Police have used new laws to tear down gang fences in Christchurch. They used a digger and arrived in force to bring down the walls around a Highway 61 gang house. Not all neighbours are happy about the move.
3. SCOTT WATSON TRIAL: The Scott Watson murder trial heard evidence from overseas today as witnesses gave evidence via sattelite of their brushes with Watson on the New Year's Eve that the Blenheim pair were last seen.
4. JFK JUNIOR: Divers are searching for the remains of John Kennedy's plane and for any other signs of them. The families have issued an emotional statement about their loss.
5. HILLARY BIRTHDAY: Today is Sir Edmund Hillary's 80th Birthday and celebrations are underway. at Government House
