ISRAEL - Ehud Barak has set a target deadline of 15 months for achieving peace in the Middle East, a timeline chosen in part to dovetail with the American political calendar and the presidential election, Israeli officials said on Sunday.
BASEBALL - David Cone dazzled the Montreal Expos with a wide assortment of pitches Sunday, throwing the 16th perfect game in major league history to lead the Yankees to a 6-0 victory.
KENNEDY - After two days of searching and holding out hope of survivors, authorities conceded late Sunday that John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and her sister likely are dead.
SERBIA - A leading Serbian opposition politician says the best way to get President Slobodan Milosevic of Yugoslavia out of power is to seduce him to resign, promising him immunity from arrest or extradition.
CLOTHING - A prosperous America bought 17.2 billion articles of clothing in 1998 -- a 16 percent increase over 1993, according to NPG Group, a market research concern in Port Washington, N.Y. -- and gave the Salvation Army alone several hundred million pieces, well over 100,000 tons.
CONGO - More than a week after the signing of a cease-fire accord to end the war in Congo, the fighting continues. The rebels say they have captured more territory and the countries embroiled in the year-old conflict are trading accusations that the agreement has been violated.
TELEPHONE TAKEOVER - One of the fiercest takeover battles in recent years has ended in a gentlemen's agreement, with the telecommunications rivals Qwest Communications International Inc. and Global Crossing Ltd. agreeing to split the spoils between them.
GOLF - The unlikely winner of the British Open Sunday was Paul Lawrie of Scotland, who started the day 10 strokes off the lead, but pulled off the greatest final-round comeback ever in a major championship.
