Leadership change sends public flooding to website
9 October 2001 - The New Zealand National Party website (www.national.org.nz) shot into first place in the ‘Lifestyle – Politics’ category of Hitwise for 9 October following the coup that saw Bill English take over as leader of the opposition.
The site’s relative market share for the category increased from 9.22% to 28.62% in just one day as the site jumped over 6,000 places in the overall rankings.
The influx of traffic to the site came primarily from online news sources, with Hitwise Click Stream* Data showing that almost a quarter of the traffic to www.national.org.nz on 9 October came from three news sites: Scoop (www.scoop.co.nz), One News (www.onenews.nzoom.com) and the New Zealand Herald (www.nzherald.co.nz).
Despite the massive increase in traffic, on 9 October the site still hadn’t been updated to announce the change of leadership.
