Qantas NZ – Reading Teaching – Cold Snap – Hunter Recovers
QANTAS NZ: Creditors left high and dry by the Qantas NZ collapse are demanding the money they lost. They faced off with
directors for the first time since the airline collapsed in April. Today it emerged that some money would be going to
creditors with the receiver saying more of the debt would be recovered than previously thought. Airline staff are owed
redundancy and holiday pay and want the company to pay up. What money is left should be handed over within the next few
weeks. Creditors have formed a committee f to look over the liquidation process.
READING TEACHING: A call has gone out for a return to phonics in literacy education in primary schools, one of the
recommendations of a Parliamentary Select Committee. Since the 1970s our students have been taught using ‘whole
language’ – which doesn’t work for all children, particularly Maori and poorer kids. When phonics was widely used, New
Zealand had the highest literacy rate in the world.
COLD SNAP: A cold snap starting to chill most of the country has frozen the hopes of big power savings. Yesterday we
saved just 6.5% - well below the 10% target. People staying indoors and cranking up their heaters are expected to impact
power savings. People are starting to feel the pinch of huge power bill. Otago and Canterbury have been hit hard by the
cold front, bringing ice and snow.
HUNTER RECOVERS: Taupo hunter Desmond Pemberton, who survived sub-zero overnight temperatures in the Kaimanawas, is
recovering in hospital with a cracked pelvis. He was found after being missing for five days after going into the bush
for just two hours.
