DAVID DOUGHERTY: The police say they still want to find the man responsible for the abduction and rape for which David
Dougherty was wrongly imprisoned for three years. The police would like to speak to the complainant who was 11 at the
time of the offence, however they say it will be up to her. Dougherty has receved nearly $900,000 in compensation.
FOREIGN STUDENTS: A law change to tighten up the supervision of wealthy foreign students from Asia is being considered.
The law change will require the Immigration Service only to provide visas to students of institutions which sign up to a
code of practice for student welfare.
MT EDEN PRISON PROTEST: Prison authorities are investigating yesterday’s disorder at Mt Eden Prison during which several
prisoners refused to return to their cells in a protest over the removal of pay phones.
KYOTO PROTOCOL: The Government has decided not to ratify the climate change Kyoto Protocol until the rules governing it
are fully resolved. Greenpeace is dismayed at the Government’s stance.
NEW AUSTRALIANS: The number of NZers opting to become Australian citizens has more than doubled since changes were made
to trans-Tasman welfare agreements.
GEORGE SPEIGHT: The Fiji coup leader George Speight and 12 others are to stand trial for Treason. The trial is set down
to begin during the week of Fijian elections. George Speight will be standing in the elections.
SEBRENICA MASSACRE: 1000s of Bosnian Muslims have returned under Nato armed guard to the town of Srebrenica to mark the
massacre of thousands of Bosnian Muslims with a memorial.
NORTHERN IRELAND: The PMs of Ireland and Britain have suspended Northern Ireland peace talks after no progress has been
made over three days. The talks will be reconvened after a few days, and the parties have had
AMBULANCE CALLS: The way Ambulance services answer emergency calls is under review. Fire and police emergency call
answering systems have already been rationalised.
ONLINE JOBS: Recruitment trends are family with more jobs being advertised online. ANZ’s job ads survey found a 10%
increase in online job advertising.
