Dairy Merger – Stabbing – Northland Fire – Fire Engine Crash – Flood Protection
DAIRY MERGER: Dairy farmers have given the GlobalCo dairy merger the go-ahead.
The vote to merge Kiwi Co-op Dairies and the Global Group into New Zealand’s largest company was decisive.
Opponents were surprised that the vote was more decisive than opinion polls suggested, as a vote against the merger was beginning to look like a distinct possibility in the lead-up to today’s vote.
The Government will table in Parliament tomorrow legislation that will allow the merger to go ahead.
Critics say that if GlobalCo was a motor vehicle it wouldn’t get a merger, because the Commerce Commission couldn’t check the company out. The Government elected to bypass Commerce Commission scrutiny to let the merger go ahead earlier this year.
GlobalCo will probably be operational by October. There has been a row over who will be the Chief Executive.
STABBING: There has been an emotional appeal today by the family of Noel McKenzie, who was stabbed to death as he lay sleeping with his wife, for someone to come forward with information. Police say they haven’t come up with a motive, so they are considering the possibility that it was a botched burglary.
NORTHLAND FIRE: There has been a second fatal fire in a Northland house without electricity. Early this morning a man was killed when his home burned down.
FIRE ENGINE CRASH: The fire service has launched an internal investigation into the fatal smash of one of its own vehicles on the way to a call-out.
FLOOD PROTECTION: Emergency measures have been taken today in Alexandra – a pub and other buildings in the Bendigo area have been smashed because the area had been flooded three times in the past decade.
