POWER CRISIS: Energy Minister Pete Hodgson is accusing some power companies of a Winter electricity price beat-up. But he admits there is the chance of a crisis. The southern hydro lakes are at 60 percent capacity. Mr Hodgson says he doesn’t want a repeat of 1992, when nothing was said until it was too late.

PARRY’S PATIENTS: Former patients of disgraced gynaecologist Graham Parry have vowed to fight on, after a ruling that ‘Patient A’ couldn’t sue Michael Bottril, the doctor at the centre of the Gisborne Cervical Cancer Inquiry, raised the bar for suing for exemplary damages.

MENINGITIS: A tripling of the death rate for meningitis has sparked a warning for extra vigilance today. Nine people have been killed buy the disease already this year, compared with three last year.

HOSPITAL STAFF MORALE: A hospital boss appears to be defying a gagging order today. Auckland District Health Board CEO David Evans said staff morale is at an all-time low, with staff breaking down.

COUNCILLOR ON RAPE CHARGES: A New Plymouth district councillor has been unmasked one of a group of gang members facing rape charges.

MARS: Astronomers are getting some of the best views ever of Mars – it’s the closest its been to earth since 1988.
